Training Your New Dog? 4 Tips
Posted on: 6 May 2022
Training a dog properly sometimes takes skill that only a professional dog trainer possesses, but there are some things you can train your dog to do. You can train your dog not to jump on people, to sit and to stay, as well as other skills. To train your dog, you need to put in the work. Read on for some tips to help you train your dog.
1. Be Patient
You have to be patient when training your dog. It isn't going to be easy, and you aren't going to be able to train your dog if you are constantly losing your patience. This is something that is going to take some time and effort on your part, and you're gong to need several days to practice the skill you're trying to teach your dog. Patience doesn't come easily, so you may have to teach yourself this skill as you go through the training.
2. Be Consistent
You need to be consistent when training your dog. You should use the same command over and over again. Varying the command is confusing to your dog, and it won't be able to pick up on what you're trying to teach it. You should also use the same visual commands as well, such as pointing down if you are trying to teach your dog to sit or holding up your hands for the stay command. You need to be consistent in your verbal commands, as well as in your visual commands.
3. Train With Treats
Use positive reinforcement by giving your dog training treats when it does something good. Positive reinforcement will help your dog understand that when it does something good, it will be rewarded. This will also help your dog understand the difference between doing something good and doing something you didn't want it to do.
4. Understand Your Dog Will Make Mistakes
Your dog is not going to pick up on the training right away and will make mistakes along the way. If your dog is a puppy, it is definitely going to make mistakes, and you need to be prepared for them. Don't punish your dog for these mistakes, just help to correct the behavior to help prevent it from continuing to happen.
If you are attempting to train a dog or a puppy, you need to put in just as much work as your pet. Consider taking your dog to a professional trainer to be trained properly and to help teach you how to train your dog as well.
